‘Off to the water’: PR action that hides problems

Today, the Hamburg Senate is underlining the ‘Ab ins Wasser’ initiative with action days for accompanied water acclimatisation. As part of this promotional measure for the Olympic application, 19,000 first-graders are to receive three free admissions to a swimming pool until the Olympic referendum on 31 May.

Eckart Maudrich, spokesperson for NOlympia Hamburg:

“This PR campaign for the Olympics conceals real problems in acquiring swimming ability: Not only have important summer outdoor pools been permanently closed in recent years – such as the Wiesenredder outdoor pool in Rahlstedt or the Aschberg outdoor pool in Hamm. There are also far too few swimming courses for children: Until the end of May, there are no more places for seahorse courses at Bäderland. There are 43 places left for Aqua Kita. The action days with exercises for accustoming to water do not fill the gap. The vast majority of the 19,000 first-graders will therefore have to do dry exercises.”
