On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Senate presented its advertising campaign for the German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2036, 2040 and 2044 at the Elbphilharmonie Plaza.
Eckart Maudrich, spokesperson for NOlympia:
‘While the Senate is holding court in order to stage its planned ‘offensive’ against the electorate, the Plebs is amazed by a drone baroque offered to those invited to the audience, paid for by the very electorate that learns all this only from the images of the reporting. This prelude to the application shows on a small scale what would be expected on a large scale: Not a festival for everyone, but an exclusive event for the top 10 per cent – financed by the entire city society. Paris called for three billion euros in one-off costs in 2024 – five Elbtowers. With this staging, the Senate makes it clear that it wants to take a similar path for Hamburg. The result: Funds that will then be lacking for education, social affairs, culture and housing. The fact that the Senate is already presenting its so-called “information” campaign before reliable figures on costs and funding are available shows one thing in particular: Those seeking genuine information and transparency must seek it elsewhere.”
